  Dear Sir & friend - Your Father, David Avis volenteered and enlisted in the Confederate Sivice on the 8th day of January 1862, in Captain D S Hagler's Company of Cavalry, and this Company was a part of the 14th Texas Regiment, Commanded by Colonel M T Johnson with S F Maines a Lieutenant Colonel. - In the Spring of 1862 they were dismounted at Little Rock Ark. and Some time that Summer David Avis was discharged, and came home, and Some time that Fall he enlisted in Captain Jesee P Quinn's Company of Cavalry, which Company was a part of Major M. M Quayle's Batallion in General James W. Throckmorton's Brigade.  Mr Avis was a Lieutenant in the Company, and I belonged to this Same Company, and Served with him until the War ended, and we were disbanded on the 25th day of June 1865.  In this Company we were on the frontier of Texas defending it against Marauding bands of Indians and Kansas Jay Hawkers -

Of Lavinia Porter Talley Chapter.  Located at Temple
County of Bell Texas.

I, the undersigned, respectfully petition to become a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy of Lavinia Porter Talley Chapter, and, if accepted, do hereby promise a strict compliance with the laws and usages of this organization.

I was born in the County of Walker and State of Texas.  I am the daughter of Charlie Gray Mooring who served in the Confederate army; who entered the service of the State of Texas on the ---  day of April A.D. 1862, in Co. G, Regm't (4th Texas) Hood's Brigade as Private; who entered Confederate service on the ---  day of April A.D. 1862, in Co. G, Regm't 4th Texas as Private; was promoted to the rank of __ and remained in service on the 10 day of Apr. A.D. 1865.  My present address is Temple, County of Bell, State of Texas.

Remarks:
Wounded at Getteysburg which left him lame for life.  Charles Gray Mooring was one among the most gallant soldiers of the 4th Texas Regiment Hood's Brigade in all places in [?].  In Camp or on the battlefield, he was ever true and faithful in the discharge of every duty.
