Information on William Garrett from Ella Jane Wilson
(C. Avis Catalog entry #841)

Hi, Charlie.  I was sleepy last night when I copied that information out of
the book, "In Their Footsteps".  I know you are interested in sources.  I
found something that Lana Digges sent me years ago that gives the same
information and tells the sources.  William Garrett - War of 1812 record -- 27
June 1855 Susannah Garrett, Declaration of Widow for Bounty Lands (Hopkins
Co., TX.) -- 27 March 1879, Susannah Garrett, Claim of Widow for Service
Pension -- 26 April 1879, Susannah Garrett, Widow's Brief -- 08 Oct. 1906,
Martha Jane Meaders, Claim for Minor Children.

Lana Digges is descended from Charles D. Garrett's sister, Lucinda Garrett,
who married #1 Henry Bullard and #2 Riley Bullard (his brother).  Riley was
the one Lucinda had the kids by.

This paper Lana sent me gives the whereabouts of William Garrett better than
the others.  Residence:  Since discharge (18 April 1813) Lauderdale Co.,
Alabama.  Fayette Co., TN. 1826-1833, Gibson Co., Indiana 1833-1840, Hopkins
Co., TX. 1840-1852.  We think he was living in Lauderdale Co., Alabama when
Presley Garrett was born in 1808.

Information on William Garrett from Ella Jane Wilson
(C. Avis Catalog entry #840)

Hi, Charlie.

A few more things I can think of tonight.  I've been trying for years to find
out who Lucinda Jane Gilton's mother was.  Her sister, Mary Etta's, death
certificate says she was "Mrs. Page".  I've also heard she was a Page from my
mother and Aunt Ora but can find absolutely nothing in any public records.  If
you have any suggestions as to where I can look for this info, I would really
appreciate it.

There is a lady on AOL who is descended from Mary Etta Gilton Evans Busbee,
the sister of Lucinda Jane Gilton Garrett.  We are both working on this puzzle
but so far haven't had any luck.

The Diana Busby that Charles Garrett married was originally Diana Kimbrell,
daughter of John Kimbrell and Susannah English Kimbrell.  Susannah's parents
were Matthew English and Dicey ____.  I don't know the name of Mr. Busby,
Diana's first husband, but they may have lived in Tishomingo, Mississippi.

Elizabeth Littlejohn's parents were Silas Littlejohn and Elizabeth Ellis.
Silas was the son of Lt. Samuel Littlejohn and Sarah Coffer.

Charles Garrett's grandparents were William Garrett b. 1788 in NC and married
to Sarah Melton, daughter of Elisha Melton, 9 Aug. 1804 in Warren Co., KY.
William was the son of Presley Garrett b. 1765-70 who m. Elizabeth Baxter.
These early Garretts went to Gibson County, Indiana and Presley died there
leaving a good size estate which is in the records of Gibson County, Indiana.

William Garrett and some of his second family (children of second wife
Susannah Huggins) left Indiana and went to Texas ca. 1848.  They stopped in
Arkansas where William's son John and his wife had a daughter, Elizabeth
Garrett.  Later, this daughter married Jessie Columbus Garrett, brother of
Charles D. Garrett, my great grandfather.

I saw the land where William Garrett settled near the Rains/Hopkins Co., TX.
line.  The foundation of the house where Jessie Columbus Garrett and his
family lived is still standing.  There are still a lot of Garretts and their
kin in the area.  Many are buried in the Clifton Cemetery where a reunion is
held every year.

Jane
