PRETTY PARTY AND SHOWER FOR MISS GLADYS ROBERSON

Mrs. Carl Waelder was hostess Saturday evening at a shower and bridge party honoring Miss Gladys Roberson, whose marriage to Jake Avis is set to be solemnized Tuesday afternoon.

The party was given at the home of Mrs. J. C. Mann, which was attractively decorated with bowls and baskets of shasia daisies, and the shower of miscellaneous gifts very prettily and informally presented to the guest of honor on her arrival.  After the shower, which was featured by the presentation to Miss Roberson of the sterling silver salad forks from the Girls Friendly club, tables were arranged for bridge, and a very delightful evening spent by a score of guests.  In the score count Miss Lillian Fain was most successful and was presented a beautiful leather bound bridge set of cards, which she presented in turn to the guest of honor.  Fruit punch was served during the evening, and a dainty ice course at the close, to the following:  Mesdames Van Allmen, Harry Baum, Julian McFall, Charles Reed, Saim, Fred Weeks, Anna Hood, Henry Ehlert, J. C. Mann, Mart Roberson and R. H. Gracey and Misses Leona Lorimer, Kate Balkema, Florence Jackson, Katherine Brothers, Ruby and Gretchen Avis and Gladys and Jennie Roberson.

AVIS-ROBERSON WEDDING WILL NOT BE AT CHURCH

The marriage of Jake Avis and Miss Gladys Roberson will be solemnized Tuesday afternoon at the Roberson home, 2215 Ninth street, instead of at the First Presbyterian Church as first announced.  The change has been made made necessary on account of Mr. Avis' illness from which he is at present convalescent.  The ceremony will be very quiet with the wedding party and relatives of the two young people present.

FIRE DESTROYS NEW HOME SATURDAY WITH DAMAGE OF $3500

Burning grass is believed to have started the fire which completely destroyed the new house at 2702 Ninth street, owned by Jake Avis, at 3:30 Saturday afternoon.  The flames gutted the interior and left nothing but a shell of the structure standing.

Firemen are of the opinion that grass burning near the west side of the place set fire to the garage, which was built on to the house, this in turn firing the main building.  The alarm was not turned in until the flames had gained too great headway to be checked.

Loss is estimated at $3500 according to Mr. Avis.  He had just started to move into the place and had put in a few articles of furniture when the fire was discovered.  The loss is said to be partially covered by insurance.

GENERAL DAVID CHILES

David Chiles, who commanded the second brigade in Governor Shelby's army, was born in Virginia, August 23, 1767, and migrated to Kentucky prior to 1790.  He came with some means, and purchased an estate near the town of Minerva, in Mason County, close to the Bracken County line.  From the profusion of cane found on his place he called it 'Caneland'.  It is the highest point between Vanceburg and Newport, Kentucky.

On the 10th of February, 1791, he married Frances, the daughter of Reverend Louis Craig, and with her received a dowry of land which gave him nearly 1500 acres as his possession.  He built a mill and distillery on Raccoon Branch of Bracken Creek, and was extremely prosperous.  He held no office, but was a man of great intelligence and courage, and commanded in a high degree the confidence of his fellow-citizens.  He was  a militia officer in Mason County, and promptly responded to Governor Shelby's call for troops.  Mason County sent three companies, and Greenup, Nicholas, Bracken, and Campbell had so strongly volunteered Governor Shelby thought it due this section to have a brigadier-general, and David Chiles was appointed to that position.

He is buried on his own farm, having provided in his will for the erection of a stone wall about the family burying-ground.  A plain slab with his name, the dates of his birth and death, constitutes the monument that marks his grave.  He died in 1834.
