BENEDICT JARBOE (JS-6)

Like his older brother and sisters, Benedict was born in Kentucky. His baptismal record, naming his parents, is at Holy Mary in Calvary, Kentucky. He evidently died young because he is not among the household of Joshua Jarboe in the 1820 census.

JAMES JARBOE (JS-7)

Of all Joshua's children, it was James who was destined by time and circumstance to become the patriarch of the family. He was the senior member of the family, outliving his brother, Richard by many years. His land holdings were considerably more extensive than those of his brother and sisters - often more than 1/2 section. He served as security and administrator for family members.  He was Uncle Jimmy to the next two generations.

James was born in Kentucky and removed to Indiana with his family while still a schoolboy. He returned to Kentucky and married Matilda Avis in Nelson County.

Matilda's father, John, was deceased at the time of her marriage, and her brother, Basil, was her bondsman. According to tax lists, the Avis' had only been in Nelson County a year. After James and Matilda married, they moved to Perry County.  Matilda's mother and brother, James, went with them. Mary Avis is buried at St. Augustine and James Avis was a livelong resident of Perry County and a next door neighbor of James and Matilda.

Although James owned many tracts of land, the home tract seems to have been in Section 17 and Section 18, Town 5 South, Range 2 West in Leopold Township. This corresponds to family stories that James and Benedict Jarboe (JS-23) lived next door to one another.

Family legend also explains why James had two sons named John. The elder John went down the river in a flatboat and never returned, they say. The family, certain that he drowned, named their next son John. The older boy is never found in Perry County records again, so presumably he did lose his life on the river.

No records have been found for James' daughter Ann at St. Augustine. The Ransoms apparently were not members of that church. However, at the death of Elisha Ransom, James served as executor and guardian for his estate. After her marriage to Archibald Little, she is found in the church records.

All of James' other children are proven by the church records.
