Josiah Stafford of Smith Co. in the state of Tennessee, who was a private in the regiment commanded by colonel A. Shepherd of the No. Carolina line, for the term of two years.
Described on the roll of West Tennessee at the rate of 8 Dollars per month, to commence on the 11 of May, 1818.
Certificate of Pension issued the 10 of Nov. 1819 and sent to John McNairy, Judge Nashville, West Tennessee

63 years old
enlisted in July 1777 for three years at Dobbs Co., North Carolina
unit:  Capt. Abraham Shepherd company  10th  North Carolina regiment
transferred to Capt. John Ingles' company in regiment of Col. Harnay
taken prisoner at siege of Charleston South Carolina
escaped July 1780; returned home (since his term was up), thus received no discharge papers
participated in Battle of Monmouth among other skirmishes
no income

her first husband was William Tetterton, now dec'd
Josiah was living with her when he enlisted

taken prisoner at siege of Charlestown South Carolina
escaped July 1780; returned home (since his term was up).  Received no discharge papers
participated in battles of Charlestown, Maoris Creek, Monmouth
farmer, but can't farm due to palsy
three children living with him:  son Merril 20; daughter Polly 18; son Joel 12
property:  1 horse, 1 hog

first service was with mounted service under Capt. John Garland, then enlisted in Capt. Abraham

taken prisoner at Charlestown, never got discharge
stricken with palsy for 14 years
