Dr. Childs Dead

Dr. C. Dwight Chiles, chief dental surgeon for the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad company, attached to the Employes hospital, died at 4o'clock Wednesday afternoon.  He has been seriously ill for a few days but it was not until this morning that his condition became grave and the physicians at the hospital gave up hope.  He was one of the sunniest men in Fairfield and one of the most popular and agreeable.  For many years he has been associated with the company, having been chosen as a proper man by Dr. Lloyd Noland to head the all-import and dental department of the company.  His friends he numbered by the hundreds, for he was ever agreeable and was popular in the extreme.  He was the son of Charles Chiles, one of the pioneer engineers of the Alabama Great Southern railroad, who gave his life in a wreck on that line years ago.

Dr. Chiles is survived by his mother, Mrs. Lena A. Chiles; his widow, who was Miss Fay Rudd of Temple, Tex.; his son, Dwight Chiles, Jr.; one sister, Mrs. H. R. Morris, and one brother, David Chiles.  Dr. Chiles was born in Birmingham November 13, 1890, graduated at the Birmingham Medical college and later at the Northwestern at Chicago.  He practiced privately before entering the service of the Tennessee company.  He served as a lieutenant of the dental corps, U. S. A., for two years during the war, later returning to his interrupted work in Fairfield.  He was also vice president of the Alabama Dental society.  His death cast a pall of sorrow over the hospital and over Fairfield.  The entire surgical and medical staff of the hospital battled courageously to save the life of their associate, all to no avail.

DOCTOR CHILES

In the passing of Doctor C. Dwight Chiles, Fairfield loses one of her most valued citizens.  As a professional man, he stood at the topof his chosen calling.  He was one of the most popular men in Fairfield, having a pleasant and attractive personality.  He was a man who had the happy faculty of meeting every one with whom he came in contact -- and they were many -- in a most cordial and friendly manner.  The entire community mourns his loss.
