Vet Bureau Head, Col. Herring, Dies
   Colonel Harry T. Herring, 65 years old, manager of the United
States veterans bureau in Louisiana for the past three years and a veteran of World War I, died last night in United States Marine hospital. He had been ill two weeks.
   A graduate of West Point, Colonel Herring was a classmate of 
General Douglas MacArthur, with whom he was associated later in the Philippines, where Colonel Herring was chief of the veterans' bureau there for a number of years.
   He had retired from the army several years ago and lived in New Mexico, where he served as state adjutant general.
   Colonel Herring was born in Tennessee and received his early education at Jackson, Tenn., from where he was appointed to West Point, according to Philip Holland, 2014 General Pershing street a boyhood schoolmate and friend for more than 50 years.
   Mr. Holland, a retired career foreign consular official, said that the body will he taken from here to Dalals, Tex., for cremation and thence sent to New Mexico.
   The widow, the former Mrs. Margaret Venabies, of Washington, and the colonel were married in Manila while he was with the veterans' bureau there. General MacArthur was best man at the wedding.
   Colonel Herring also is survived by two sisters, Mrs. John Barry, a New Mexico ranchwoman, and Miss Ethel Herring, of Jackson, Tenn.; a brother, Daniel W. Hearing. Jr., with the government in Washington, and a step-daughter, Miss Shirley Venabies, Boston, Mass.

COLONEL HERRING FUNERAL TODAY


   Funeral services for Colonel Harry T. Herring, manager of the United States veterans' administration in Louisiana for the past three years, who died late Thursday following an illness of two weeks, will be held today at 4 p. m. from the funeral home of Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp, Inc., 4127 South Claiborne avenue. Interment will be in Santa Fe, N. M.
   Colonel Herring, who resided at 5925 Prytania street, was 65 years old and a native of Tennessee, He was appointed to West Point Military academy where he was a classmate of General Douglas MacArthur, with whom he was associated later in the Philippines. Colonel Herring served as chief of the veterans' administration in the islands for a number of years. General MacArthur was best man at the wedding when Colonel Herring was married in Manila to the former Mrs. Margaret Venables of Washington.
   Retiring from the army several years ago, he lived in New Mexico, where he served as state adjutant general until he came to New Orleans three years ago. He was a veteran of World War I.
   He is survived by two sisters, Mrs, John Barry of Santa Fe, N. M., and Miss Ethel Herring Jackson, Tenn.; a brother, Daniel W. Herring, Jr., Washington, D. C., and a stepdaughter, Miss Shirley Venables, Boston, Mass.

Mrs. Jim J. Taylor Dies Early Friday
   Mrs. Mattie Taylor, 65, of 1616 Harrison, long-time resident of Wichita Falls, died in a Wichita Falls hospital Friday morning about 6 o'clock.
   She was the widow of the late Jim J. Taylor, who died in August, 1942.
   Funeral services will be conducted from the Floral Heights Methodist Church Saturday at 2 p. m. with Rev. Paul C. Stephenson, pastor, and Rev. Finis Crutchfield, a former pastor, officiating. Pallbearers will be Leslie Humphrey, J. E. Handy, Henry Sonnamaker, J. H. Brotherton, Reed Taylor "and Robert Murrell. Interment will be at Petrolia Cemetery under direction of Hampton, Vaughan & Merkle.
   Mrs. Taylor had resided in Wichita Falls 25 years. She came here from Clay County, where she had resided a quarter of a century.
   Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Leo LeBlanc, Wichita Falls; Mrs. Claire Shanks, Dallas; a son, Wylie Taylor, Wichita Falls; a sister, Mrs. Mark Roberson, Wichita Falls, and three brothers, Rufe Thompson, Pampa; Clark Thompson, Lubbock; F. S. Thompson, Clay County, and several nieces and  nephews.

    Clark Glenn Thompson, 77, 2704 Amherst, resident of Lubbock 22 years, died about 4 a. m, today in Taylor Clinic-Hospital following a short illness.
    Thompson was a night watchman for KCBD.
    Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a. m. Saturday in McDonald Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. E. H. Crandall. associate pastor, and Dr. H. I. Robinson, pastor, of First Methodist Church, officiting.
    Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery.
    Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Eulin Hastings and Mrs. N. H. Waldrop, both of Lubbock; two sons, Glenard Thompson, Oklahoma City, and Cecil R. Thompson, Lubbock; one brother, Rufe Thompson, Pampa; one sister, Mrs, Mart  Roberson, Wichita Falls; and three grandchildren.

Meets Death In Accident

    The following obituary appeared in the Wichita Times Of Monday. George Thomson was a member of the "Uncle Billy" Thomson family, long time in the early days resident in the Riverland country. George went to the Klondike in 1898, and was there to give the glad hand to the Henrietta party that arrived two years later:
    G. W. Thomson, aged about 55, a step brother of Mrs. Mart Roberson, 2121 Ninth street, who has made his home here for about a year, was killed in the freight yards at Tucumcari, New Mexico Saturday night. Mr. Thomson, who was associated with Mr. Roberson in the cattle business, was accompanying a shipment of cattle from Fort Worth to Santa Rosa, New Mexico.
    No details concerning his death have been received further than that his body was found, cut in two on the railroad tracks in the yards at Tucumcari.
    The body was brought here arriving early Monday morning and the funeral was held from the residence of Mrs. Roberson, 2121 Ninth this afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev F. F. Walters officiating. Burial was in Riverside cemetery.
     Mr. Thomson had been a resident of Devol, Okla., for a number of years. He was a member of the Christian Church. He leaves ten sisters and brothers as follows: B. F. Thomson, Brownwood, Texas; J. F. Thomson, Hastings, Okla.: Chas. Thomson, Devol, Okla.; J. H. Thomson, Mangum; C. G. Thomson, Devol; Mrs. Jesse Williams, Delta, Colo.; Mrs. R. B. Thomson, Pampa, Texas; Mrs. J. J. Taylor, Petrolia; F. S. Thomson,   Petolia;   F. B. Thomson, Archer City; and Mrs. Mart Roberson, Wichita Falls. All with the exception of Mrs. Jesse Williams and R. B. Thomson were here for the funeral. His mother, Mrs. M. J. Thomson of this city, also survives.

The numerous friends in this city of Mr. and Mrs. Mart Roberson, who formerly resided here, will be sorry to learn of the death of their baby boy, which ocurred at their home at Amarillo on Sunday morning. The remains of the little child were interred at Texico, N. M. on Monday.

Martin Harold Roberson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mart Roberson, died at Amarillo, Texas, Saturday morning, May 11th, aged two  years.  The remains were brought to Texico for interment.  The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon, Rev. J. L. Southward conducting the services. He spoke in words of tenderest sympathy and comfort, of the deepest Christian hope and promise. The music at the tomb was sweet and beautiful when the little form was laid to rest in our silent city.

"Death came with friendly care,
The opening bud to heaven conveyed,
And bade it blossom there.”

    Mrs. James Rudd. 1509 Rainbow Bend, died in a local hospital Saturday. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Dwight Chiles of Austin; Miss Madge Rudd of Spartansburg, S.C., Mrs. T. J. McElhenney of Austin, and Mrs. L. V. Ragsdale of Fall River, Mass., and one sister, Mrs. J. Thomas Hall of Nacogdoches. The body is at Cook Funeral Home.
    Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at University Presbyterian Church with Dr. W. M. Logan officiating.
