Julia Witherspoon

Funeral services for Mrs. Julia H. Barry Witherspoon, 91, who died Saturday night at a local rest home, will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday from the St. James Episcopal Church with the Rev. Joseph Fasel officiating.

Burial will be in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Steed-Todd Funeral Home.

Mrs. Witherspoon was born May 10, 1884, in McNairy County, Tenn., she graduated from Methodist Conference Female Institute in Jackson, Tenn. She came as a pioneer to Farwell in 1908. Mrs. Witherspoon taught school in Clovis in 1912 and in Roswell in 1913.

She married John H. Barry, then owner-operator of Barry Hardware in Clovis and also taught ranch and farm interests in the High Plains area. < "?" added in margin here >

Mrs. Witherspoon was a member of the Madison chapter of the Daughters of the Amerian Revolution (DAR) in Jackson, Tenn. In 1961, she assisted in organizing and was a charter member of the El Portal Chapter of DAR in the Clovis area. She was a charter member of the American Red Cross in Clovis at the beginning of World War I. She moved to Amarillo, Tex., in 1945 following the death of Mr. Barry in 1944, where she was active in civic affairs.

She married Frank Witherspoon of Kansas City, Mo., in 1952, and moved back to Clovis in 1953. Mr. Witherspoon died in 1963.

She also was an active member of the St. James Episcopal Church and active in P. E. O., being a charter member in Chapter G in Clovis.

Survivors are one brother, Dan W. Herring of Hyattsville, Md.; one sister, Miss Ethel Herring of Cullman, Ala.; and one niece, Mrs. Nancy Herring Rodgers of Silver Spring, Md.

A Pioneer Lady Here for Interment

Mrs. M. J. Thompson died at the home of a son at Pampa, Grey county, on Sunday, July 4th, aged 83 years 6 months and 7 days. The remains were brought here for interment, and funeral services were held in the Hope cemetery chapel Tuesdy, conductd by Rev. L. D. Shawver.

The deceased was a Clay county pioneer, the family having been among the early settlers in the Riverland country.
