The death of J. D. Avis marks the passing of a generation of strong, determined, courageous, hardy, tireless men without whom this part of the Southwest could not have been developed.
Born in North Texas three quarters of a century ago and having lived all his life in this section and all his life having been interested in the ranching and cattle Mr. Avis was representative of the best that came from the pioneer stock which he honored and revered.
As could be said of most of the men who are remembered in his generation he was positive in his convictions and sought to apply forthright and austere principles to his own life. He recognized in other men those qualities which marked his own manhood and was steadfast in his loyalties.
We of a newer generation owe to that generation of which Mr. Avis was representative a debt we can never repay. We do well to pause in respect to the memory of this pioneer who as gone on.
